Just as a pitcher cannot afford simply to throw the ball and relax and rest, relying on the infield to get all hit balls, so the spiker becomes a defensive player immediately after contacting the ball. If the spiker
is being blocked, he must be ready to make a quick recovery shot. He must have
both hands ready to pass or "fist" a ball upward before it hits the floor or to
recover the ball out of the net. This skill comes only after intensive practice.
