FAQ: Rules of Volleyball

Volleyball has existed for several decades. It was invented as a cross between hand ball and tennis. The sport flourished and developed as time went on and more accurate rules came into play.

Q: How many people stay on the court?
A: Each game consists of at least two, but no more than six players on each team. Most high school and below leagues play with six players.
Q: How do you score?
A: Prior to the 2010 season, the only way to score was if the serving team was able to knock the ball into the opposing teams court. Now, if either team gets the ball to hit the floor on the other teams court, they get a point.
Q: How many times can each team hit the ball per side?
A: After the ball is served, the opposing team has a chance of three hits to get the ball back to the serving team. The serving team has three hits to get it over the net, until one of the teams can score a point.
Q: What type of serve is required for high school students?
A: Junior varsity teams usually have some play-room with serving. They can serve under-arm, over-arm or side-arm. Varsity and up teams are required to serve the ball over-arm or side-arm. Under-arm serves are not permitted, as it is the easiest and most accurate serve in the sport.
Q: Are there mixed gender volleyball teams?
A: Yes, there are several mixed gender volleyball teams all across the world; although, not usually in college or professional leagues.
